Slippers, Sippers and Spinners,
I'm hardly ever the guy that gets to wait with the boat while someone else runs the shuttle on a guide's day off.
Usually I'm the guy thinking... I wonder if my buddy is fishing right now, while we run the gauntlet through town trying not to get run off the road by logging trucks running hot on the small winding road while watching for dimples in the slick pools we just finished floating through. Or, if they are packing up the gear, breaking down rods and putting away the boat bags that have lost much of their contents, strewn all over the boat to make the boat loading that much quicker when we get there.
So, I'm up on the bank overlooking the river at the shitty unimproved "Boatramp". At the top of the hill, where I can get service on my phone to check in with my wife before the 3 hour drive home, I'm surprised to see that the day is not over. The spinnerfall is in full force right across the river.
The Female Hendrickson Spinners with their giant bright orange egg sacks are hard to miss, dipping and diving. This riffle is heavy water but with a few interesting pockets.
All of a sudden I see a commotion on the far bank. This marginal water, in my mind, has a heavy riffle with a little back eddy on the far bank and there are what appears to be at least 3 fish aggressively gulping spinners. To my wife on the phone, "Hey Honey, there's a good one rising..."I gotta go"".
This one fish looked Huge. This fish was slashing back and forth, head-dorsal-tail. The dorsal fin looked really out of place. This tail was like the size of my hand, in this super shallow pocket, sharking these spinners that just started hitting the water a few minutes ago.
All I am thinking is, can I reach them? I'm in board shorts and slippers at this point as I already peeled off my waders and the water is barely 50 degrees.

April 24thGrannoms and Hendrickson duns and spinners Steelhead Oct 2022 First groups of Fall Run fish poking their heads into the cool stream with evening temps dropping and rains these past weeks. It won't be long for the swing bit to pick up with Chromer. Steelhead on the swing has been the best way to target the most aggressive fish. These are the fish that cartwheel and backflip when they realize that they are hooked. Clients that enjoy nymphing are doing well with indicator rigs, light weight systems and caddis, beads, stoneflies and small wooly buggers. With the world's largest populations per mile of Steelhead and the best Trout fishing east of the Mississippi, we do not have to travel too far to put you in front of the fish of a lifetime.
Trout Fishing has been good, hoppers and Streamers after the rains swell the streams and rivers. Mousing has been steady. Our Spring Hatches will be starting in late March Early April with Grannoms, Henny's and BWOs spotted last weekend in small numbers with fish eating the BWO's
MUSKY The Jims Fly Shop and Scientific Anglers Team Wins the Beast of the East! Our Team made up of Jim Geary of Jims Fly Shop, David Litten of Scientific Anglers and Orvis and Chas Mease Won the 1st Place Team Prize for Landing 3 Muskies. Also, the 38" Musky won the 3rd Largest Fish of the Tournament also. Our Team landed some significant bycatch with a 19" Smallmouth, a 30" Pike and another smallmouth in the 18" range.
Musky and Pike have been aggressive with cooler nights dropping daytime temps back into the 30'-60's. Mornings, Evenings and Moon windows have been short but good action when they turn on. We are spending most of our time lately on the Allegheny River Tribs. They are producing some of the best Musky fishing we have seen in years. Pike, Smallmouth and Walleye are the by catch but provide heaps of action and keep you engaged all day. The Fall bite is the most predictable and fish gorge to put on weight prior to winter. Last 3 trips all produced 9 landed Musky.

Streamer Time!!! October Caddis
10/10/22The fall Pre-Spawn Bite is on. Larger Streamers like the 3 Peckered Billy Goat, double deceivers, Junior triple D's in the 7" range. on Warmer days, you can splat a Beetle in front of a rising fish and they will scarf it down.
...Until Next March It is that time of year when the bugs start to make their way to the surface, rocks and air to take flight for the short time to procreate and feed the trout crippled duns, emergers, swimming nymphs and spent spinners. Grannoms and Hendricksons are in full swing on most of our rivers and streams. Streamers on the colder mornings and in the higher water, Browns are getting aggressive and beginning to gluttonously feed. Now the bigger fish have the feed bag on to get their body mass back to normal after spawn and winter. Some of our biggest fish of the year are taken in the early Spring, April rains and warmer days with heavy flows can bring the fish of your life within reach. Grannoms, Hendricksons, Quill Gordons SMALLMOUTH Smally fishing begins in Late April and Early May when the Lake Run Pre-Spawn fish hit the tribs. Sept -October are great months to target Smallies and Trout on the same tripLOW AND SLOW for the big Smallies that want to eat now until the temps come up a few more degrees.
Classroom seminars and instruction available Classes include advanced Fly Tying, Flies for Trophy Trout, Hatch matching, Musky and Pike fly design, Saltwater fly design for Bonefish, Redfish, Snook, Permit and Tarpon. Slippers Sippers and Spinners Continued:
In I go. Not much traction with the slippers but hopping rock to rock, I'm all of a sudden in the middle of the heavy spring current. Making a few casts from the middle of the River, I put one in there at about 80 feet. Roll cast a mend and the fish comes right to it. I try to get tight but the Roll mend put just a little too much slack in the line. Looking over my right shoulder, I just noticed that the boys showed up with the trailer. I explain what is going on and they both jump in the Boat and row out to see if I'm full of shit. I jump in the Boat, Chase drops the Anchor and now we are in a perfect position and, The fish is still Rising?!?! My younger buddy who has landed plenty of fish including Taimen in Mongolia and some other crazy shit, had been telling me that day that he had not yet landed a Brown trout on a Dry fly. I decided to see if we could fix that and I let my buddy take the first crack at this fish. A bit to anxious, he tried but overpowered a cast to soon and the line twisted up on a tailing loop.
Again, this fish is "Bug Drunk" and still rising. I asked for my rod back and was able to untangled it. I figured it was my turn and backhanded one right where it needed to be. This fish immediately nosed up and lip smacked my Henny Spinner. I knew this fish was worthy of the attention we were giving it, but didn't expect the fight that just started. This fish ran 40 yards completely across the river in heavy current. A good bit of back and forth and moved upstream but stayed buried on the bottom. The line was piano wire tight. Hearing the line cutting through the water in the current I tried to gauge how much pressure I could put on the 5X tippet I had on for the picky fish we cast at earlier. Should we chase after this fish? Not wanting to have to row/drag the boat back upriver to the boat ramp, we stayed put and didn't chase it down right away. I thought about jumping in since my shorts and slippers were already soaked, but I couldn't see the bottom in the slightly off-color water. Suddenly, this fish came off the bottom, charging hard to the surface and I kept up the best I could, reeling as fast as I possible. A couple of head turns and in the net she goes. Wow, that was fun!
